More drones are coming to American skies. And one of the largest companies in the world is behind it.
What’s happening:
- Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has announced that their commercial drones have received approval from the Federal Aviation Authority for longer distance flights in the United States
Why it matters:
- The new approval from the Federal Aviation Authority will allow Amazon to expand the distance their drones are allowed to fly to make deliveries to customers and enable Amazon to expand their drone fleet in the United States
Going deeper:
- In order to earn a new approval from the Federal Aviation Authority, Amazon had to demonstrate their drones were capable of operating beyond the visual line of sight and can safely navigate away from obstacles such as planes or helicopters
- Amazon initially plans to begin rolling out more longer distance drone deliveries starting in College Park, Texas
The intrigue:
- Other publicly traded companies have also recently been making a push towards drones, with DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH) previously announcing a partnership with drone manufacturer Wing to deliver food to customers located in Christianburg, Virginia
