Mentioned:
The Canadian government is getting serious about stopping wildfires. And they are turning to a publicly traded company to do it.
What’s happening:
- Spire Global (NYSE: SPIR) has announced they have been awarded a new $72M CAD deal for wildfire prevention from the Canadian Space Agency
Why it matters:
- This is one of the largest deals that the Canadian Space Agency has ever done to leverage leading edge satellite technology and artificial intelligence to be able to more rapidly identify wildfires that are beginning to spread to dangerous levels within Canada
By the numbers:
- The new deal between the Canadian Space Agency and Spire Global is expected to last a minimum of 5 years once fully operational
- The Canadian government has publicly stated they currently spend $1B CAD annually in dealing with wildfires, which does not include property damages or other harmful consequences
Going deeper:
- Spire Global will collaborate with satellite startup OroraTech to deploy space based thermal infrared cameras that are able to quickly detect the patterns of new wildfires
- The new partnership between the Canadian Space Agency and Spire Global will put a large amount of focus on Indigenous communities where both technology and resources have been historically limited and wildfires have caused enormous damage due to their ability to spread without any intervention
The intrigue:
- Aerospace company Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) just recently entered into a deal with OroraTech to use their rockets to launch wildfire detection satellites into orbit from Rocket Lab’s facility in New Zealand
