European forests are being ushered into the age of carbon credits.
What’s happening:
- Estonian carbon removal startup Arbonics has raised $6M USD in a seed round
- The round included participation from NordicNinja, Plural and Tilia Impact Ventures
The big idea:
- Arbonics helps landowners earn new income from their property through generating verified, high quality carbon credits
- Through on the ground censoring, soil readings, satellite imagery and other forms of data modelling, Arbonics is able to come up with a customized plan for property owners to take part in carbon sequestration
- Arbonics is able to leverage all their data into identifying what the best areas of their land are most ideal to plant new forests on and how to optimize for generating high quality carbon credits
Going deeper:
- Forestry projects as a source of nature based carbon credits have recently been seeing a major new influx in venture funding and institutional capital
- Nordic bank SwedBank has partnered with Arbonics to provide loans and financing to landowners who want to plant new trees on land that has not previously been forested on their property
By the numbers:
- 4,000 landowners have already worked with Arbonics
- Arbonics has analyzed over 200,000 hectares of forest land
- Through their data modelling and planning, Arbonics has helped accelerate the planting of 4 million new trees
- Since inception Arbonics has raised $8M USD
