One of the biggest delivery companies in the world is getting in on something new: drones.
What’s happening:
- DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH) and drone manufacturing company Wing have launched a new partnership to use drones to bring deliveries to DoorDash customers in the United States for the very first time
- DoorDash and Wing’s new partnership will initially be tested out in Christianburg, Virginia to allow drones to deliver items directly to customers homes
Why it matters:
- Using drones for deliveries within a small distance has shown a lot of promise for significantly reducing carbon emissions, as most local deliveries are still done by gas powered vehicles
By the numbers:
- Wing has successfully made more than 350,000 drone deliveries across 3 countries
Going deeper:
- DoorDash and Wing previously successfully launched drone deliveries together in Australia
- Drone delivery startups have been on the rise, notably with Aviant recently launching deliveries in Norway with the world’s longest range drone that is purpose built for home deliveries
The intrigue:
- As part of the initial pilot project in Virgina between DoorDash and Wing, only items ordered from fast food chain Wendys (NASDAQ: WEN) will be available for drone delivery
