Quantum computing is on the rise. And now, the state of Illinois is getting ready to build the single largest facility for quantum computing in the United States of America.
What’s happening:
- The Illinois government has announced they will fund a new leading edge quantum computing campus in partnership with PsiQuantum
- The new campus is known as the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park
Why it matters:
- The new facility will be the single largest campus for quantum computing in the United States of America, who recently saw the White House declare quantum computing to be a critical technology for the future
Going deeper:
- PsiQuantum is one of the most ambitious startups pursuing new technologies in quantum computing and previously landed a strategic investment from the Australian government for just under a billion dollars
By the numbers:
- The Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park will span approximately 400 acres once fully constructed
- PsiQuantum has publicly stated they are aiming for the new facility to host a quantum computer with 1M quantum bits, which would be significantly larger than the current largest quantum computers in the world which have 1000 quantum bits
The intrigue:
- The new quantum computing campus will be built in the former location of the United States Steel manufacturing facility along the shoreline of Lake Michigan
