Robotics might be changing the future of food and beverage production next.
What’s happening:
- Montreal, Canada based robotics automation startup Relocalize has raised $5.8M CAD in a seed round
- The round was led by Desjardins Capital, the investment arm of Desjardins Group
The big idea:
- Relocalize uses robotics technology to build micro factories for food and beverage companies to significantly accelerate their production capabilities through automation
- By building small micro factories roughly the size of shipping containers, Relocalize enables food and beverage companies to massively reduce the costs typically associated with transporting products from remote production facilities to grocery distributors
By the numbers:
- Food production is responsible for approximately 37% of all greenhouse gas emissions globally
- Agricultural products represent 30% of all freight that is transported by vehicles on the road
Going deeper:
- Relocalize’s micro factories also have the potential to enormously reduce the carbon emissions caused by vehicle transportation, which is one of the biggest challenges for food and beverage companies to get closer to net zero
The intrigue:
- Relocalize has initially validated their technology and robotics through the production of ice cubes, which are made without any human labour and are manufactured into packaging completely autonomously
