Peter Thiel is getting behind a new startup who wants to bring the worlds of crypto and artificial intelligence together.

What’s happening:

  • Open source artificial intelligence startup Sentient has raised $85m USD in a new seed round financing
  • The round was co-led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and included participation from Pantera Capital and Framework Ventures

The big idea:

  • Sentient is aiming to build open source artificial intelligence code that is not controlled by a singular tech giant, which is a concern of many about the future of artificial intelligence
  • Sentient is being built on layer two blockchain Polygon with the intent of being decentralized and globally accessible
  • Sentinet will also allow developers to own stakes in the artificial intelligence models they help design and build, as part of an effort to change the way that new technology is developed and monetized

Going deeper:

  • The intersection of artificial intelligence and crypto continues to expand, with asset management giants such as Coatue previously making a strategic investment into Hut8 (NASDAQ: HUT) to leverage their Bitcoin mining facilities for hosting GPUs for artificial intelligence cloud computing
