There’s a new way to order cannabis in Alberta, Canada. And Uber is behind it.
What’s happening:
- Uber (NASDAQ: UBER) has officially launched cannabis deliveries in the province of Alberta through a partnership with popular cannabis marketplace Leafly
- The partnership combines the delivery network of UberEats with Leafly’s access to local cannabis retailers
How it works:
- Users of UberEats are able to choose cannabis products that are available from local retailers within Alberta
- Once a product is selected, payment and delivery instructions are provided through the UberEats app to local retailers
- Due to regulations, only the provincially certified employees of local cannabis retailers are able to complete the deliveries to consumers and are also responsible for verifying they are of legal age to consume cannabis
Going deeper:
- UberEats and Leafly first launched their cannabis delivery partnership in British Columbia, which marked the first time ever that Uber had ventured into delivering cannabis
The intrigue:
- Uber has been making a push to accelerate innovation around UberEats, notably making a strategic investment into Serve Robotics (NASDAQ: SERV) to integrate their autonomous robotics into short distance deliveries globally
