There’s a new startup focused on becoming the first mobile network built around privacy. But, why?
What’s happening:
- Privacy focused mobile network startup Cape has raised $61M USD in a new funding round
- The round was led by iconic Silicon Valley venture capital fund a16z and included notable participation from XYZ Ventures, Point72 Ventures and others
The big idea:
- Cape is building a mobile network focused on privacy to protect the data of users and make it more challenging for hackers to be able to trace your personal information
- Cape is also committed to never selling their users data to any advertisers to further bolster anonymity
Why it matters:
- Some of the largest mobile providers in North America have come under scrutiny for large hacks and data leaks that comprise the privacy of their users
- Legacy mobile network companies are also notorious for selling their users data and finding ways to monetize their personal information
Going deeper:
- Cape is also focused on leveraging their privacy technology to improve the experience individuals have with mobile carrier companies, including finding new ways to fend off spam phone calls to users who are using their mobile network
The intrigue:
- Cape does not even require individuals to provide their name in order to sign up for an account
