Data centres are one of the most important foundational pieces for the artificial intelligence revolution. And Amazon is making their biggest bet yet on new infrastructure.
What’s happening:
- Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has announced they will invest $100B USD into developing new data centres to expand both their cloud computing and artificial intelligence computing infrastructure
Why it matters:
- The sudden explosion of venture capital funding for artificial intelligence startups has caused a boom for data centres infrastructure and even led to asset management giants such as Coatue to invest directly into Bitcoin mining companies to leverage their existing data centres for GPU hosting
By the numbers:
- Amazon plans to have fully deployed $100B USD into the construction of new data centres within 10 years
- Currently, Amazon already has 216 new data centres that are expected to be operational within the next few years
Going deeper:
- Amazon has also been acquiring data centre campuses recently, including a Pennsylvania based data centre which is powered entirely by nuclear energy
- One of the largest private investment companies in the world Starwood Capital previously announced they would launch a purpose built fund exclusively for the construction and development of data centres aiming to host GPUs for artificial intelligence cloud computing
