Gevo Is Supplying Low Carbon Racing Fuel To Shell

August 27, 2024

Shell's race cars need high performance fuel. But, could it be produced from agricultural waste?

What’s happening:

  • Sustainable fuel company Gevo (NASDAQ: GEVO) will begin supplying low carbon intensity fuel blend stock to Shell Global Solutions Deutschland to be used in motorsports

The big idea:

  • Gevo produces low carbon fuel blendstock through converting sustainable feedstocks such as agricultural waste and turning it into renewable natural gas
  • This process is done by capturing methane biogas with manure digesters which can then be processed through a gas upgrading unit to produce renewable natural gas that is suitable to be used as fuel

By the numbers:

  • Gevo has been granted more than 350 unique patents around various aspects of their proprietary technology and production processes for sustainable fuel

Going deeper:

  • Gevo is primarily focused on producing sustainable jet fuel, which is an area of innovation that has previously seen KLM Dutch Royal Airlines and Boeing enter into supply agreements with startups amidst a growing pressure for aviation companies to massively reduce their total carbon dioxide emissions
  • Gevo’s production facility that turns alcohol into sustainable jet fuel is the first production facility of its kind to ever exist and operate in North America, which has already landed large aviation customers such as Delta (NYSE: DAL) and American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL)

The intrigue:
