More hydrogen powered buses are coming to the United States of America.
What’s happening:
- Ballard Power (NASDAQ: BLDP) has landed a new deal to supply heavy duty bus company New Flyer with 200 hydrogen fuel cell engines
Why it matters:
- The hydrogen fuel cell engines being provided by Ballard Power will allow New Flyer to operate hydrogen powered buses for public transportation in states such as California, Washington, Arizona, Nevada and New York
Going deeper:
- New Flyer is a subsidiary of low emission bus conglomerate NFI Group (TSX: NFI)
- Ballard Power has been on the leading edge of hydrogen powered buses as a way to decarbonize public transportation, previously landing a mega deal with European bus manufacturing company Solaris to supply them with hydrogen fuel cell engines
The intrigue:
- Using hydrogen fuel cell engines instead of internal combustion engines has also become a new alternative for commercial vehicles, with First Hydrogen (TSXV: FHYD) previously running a pilot project with a gas distribution company in Wales to leverage their hydrogen commercial vans for their deliveries
