Some of the largest publicly traded chip manufacturers and artificial intelligence companies are coming together to explore something new: lithium battery technology.
What’s happening:
- Battery technology company SES AI (NASDAQ: SES) has launched a new collaboration with Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Super Micro Computers (NASDAQ: SMCI) and Crusoe to leverage artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of new materials for electric vehicles and lithium batteries
The big idea:
- The new collaboration is aiming to use artificial intelligence to map universes of electrolytes and small molecules to better understand battery chemistry, energy storage and energy efficiency
- Through building a database of the properties and structures of each molecule, SES AI is aiming to construct and train a Large Language Model capable of providing scientific insights into potential new ways of manufacturing lithium batteries and breakthrough material science discoveries
- SES AI is focused on building a leading edge Large Language Model that can make unique predictions to be tested in the laboratory about material science and battery technology that could be applied to more than just electric vehicles and could represent new breakthroughs for the larger power grid, electronics manufacturing and more
Why it matters:
- This is one of the most significant collaborations between chip manufacturing giants and artificial intelligence companies to ever be formed around making new technological breakthroughs in material science and lithium battery technology, which has enormous potential for the global energy transition and decarbonization
Going deeper:
- SES AI has made significant breakthroughs in the production of lithium metal batteries, which has landed them strategic investments from some of the largest automakers in the world including General Motors (NYSE: GM), Hyundai and Honda
- The new Large Language Model being developed as part of the collaboration will be trained on Nvidia’s popular H100 GPU clusters and supported on Crusoe’s sustainable computing infrastructure
The intrigue:
- SES AI has also been supplying their lithium metal batteries to electric vertical takeoff and landing companies as a new alternative to traditional lithium ion batteries
