The New Silicon-Based EV Battery That Can Charge In Five Minutes

November 13, 2023
x min read

Charging the battery of an electric vehicle might be getting a whole lot faster soon.

What’s happening:

  • Israel based battery startup StoreDot has partnered with electric vehicle company Polestar (NASDAQ: PSNY) to develop a rapidly charging battery
  • StoreDot calls the new battery technology ‘100in5’, meaning it can charge an electric vehicle for 100 miles of range in just 5 minutes

How it works:

  • StoreDot’s technology replaces the graphite in lithium batteries with silicon to increase the speed in which they are capable of charging
  • Silicon is proving to provide much more energy density when compared to graphite and unlocks faster charging times

Going deeper:

  • Using silicon instead of graphite for electric vehicle batteries is something being pursued by other automakers including GM, Porsche and Mercedes Benz

By the numbers:

  • StoreDot has successfully conducted over 1,000 tests of their battery technology without any degradation
  • Polestar vehicles currently charge in the range of 200-250kW but StoreDot’s technological breakthrough could unlock charging of 350kW

The fine print:

  • Polestar has not yet debuted this new battery technology yet and has only publicly stated they will launch a prototype sometime next year
